In a career that lasted from 1911 until 1926, he was rarely beaten. He won his first national title in 1912 and three years later gained his first world title, in the standing 24-inch chop. His career was interrupted by active service during World War I, during which he earned a Military Medal, but he returned to prove his chopping was as good as it ever was, again winning the standing 24-inch world title in 1920 and the 14-inch standing in 1926.
