The son of a rider-turned-trainer, Lance O’Sullivan was born to racing. From his first race ride in 1980, wins and records fell to him as if by right – champion jockey a record twelve times, six wins in a day on five occasions, a record 193 wins in the season of 2001-02, sixty-two Group One wins (including ten in Australia). The list could go on. Among the memorable, the unforgettable, were the Japan Cup win on Horlicks in 1989, the W S Cox Plate on Surfers Paradise in 1991 or even the second place on Waverley Star behind Bonecrusher in the 1986 Cox Plate, a race sometimes dubbed as “the race of the century.” From start to finish, he rode nearly 2500 winners.
