Jarden was a champion schoolboy athlete (he set a school 440 yards record that lasted 40 years). By the time he was 19, he was chosen to play on the wing for Wellington and he’d played for the North Island when he was 20. He was chosen for the All Blacks in Australia in 1951 and made an astonishing impact, scoring 88 points in six matches. He played in all five tests on the British tour in 1953-54, continued against Australia in 1955 and at the age of 26, announced his retirement after the 1956 series against South Africa. Jarden was later a successful businessman and also turned his competitive talents to ocean racing, skippering a yacht, Barnacle Bill, in the Admiral’s Cup. Return to the Inductee list
