One of the most successful and respected exponents in the related field of harness racing in the 20th century was a Tasmanian called Devine. This one was Cecil, who came to New Zealand as a 20-year-old in 1936 and who seemed to make the New Zealand Trotting Cup his own. He had 19 drives in the cup for six wins and five placings, winning first with Van Dieman in 1951 and last with Lord Module in 1979. In between, Devine drove False Step to three successive cup wins, one of only two horses to achieve the feat. Devine also took False Step to second in the 1961 Interdominion final and a few months later beat American champion Adios Butler at Yonkers in New York. Return to the Inductee list
