Bill Broughton
Inducted in 1996
Bill Broughton was a master jockey who set the standards to which others aspired.
Sporting Category:
  • Thoroughbred racing
He rode 1446 winners in New Zealand and 11 in Australia and even in the 1990s, was still sixth on the New Zealand alltime list.

He won 11 premierships and was among the top three another nine times. He was the second jockey to ride 1000 winners and during the 1940s, rode twice as many as anyone else. Among so many victories, there were some he especially treasured.

He was most proud of his victory on Sombrero to win the Wellington Cup in 1957. But he also won two other Wellington Cups, two New Zealand Cups, two New Zealand Derbies and many other big wins in a career that began in the late 20s and ended in 1959.

Norman Read

(1931 - 1994)

For older New Zealanders, the lasting image of the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 is of the smiling face of Norman Read as he strode into the Melbourne Cricket Ground to win the 50km walk, one of two gold medals won by New Zealanders in Melbourne.
