She not only won, she set course records in both. In New York, she beat the time of the great Norwegian, Grete Waitz, and in so doing gave women’s marathons a new international face. For two years, she was the fastest woman marathon runner in the world. But she was much more than “just” a marathon runner of outstanding ability. She competed on the track, the road and the crosscountry course for New Zealand and won national titles in cycling and triathlon as well.
