Denis Hulme
Inducted in 1993
Denny Hulme lived to race, whether small sports cars or huge trucks and in the most competitive motorsport of all, the intensity of Formula One, he was New Zealand’s only world champion.
Sporting Category:
  • Motorsport
Hulme started his motorsport career in an MG TF sports car in 1955 and in a life devoted to racing, he won eight Formula One grand prix and in each of his 10 years in Formula One, he never once finished out of the top six.

Hulme joined Jack Brabham’s Formula One team in 1965 and two years later he beat his boss to become world champion.

He joined compatriot Bruce McLaren’s team for 1968 and stayed there until he retired from Formula One seven years later. He drove in 112 grand prix.

He returned to racing trucks and saloon cars for fun when in his 50s, and died of a heart attack while competing in the Australian touring car race at Bathurst.

Sporting Spotlight

Eight, 1971-72

(1971 - 1972)

The success of the New Zealand rowing eight at the Munich Olympics in 1972, the same eight that had won the European championship the year before, was one of those wins that seem to transcend sport.
