Dick Tayler
Inducted in 1990
Richard Tayler or Dick Tayler, whatever he was called he will forever be linked with the first day of competition at the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch in 1974.
Sporting Category:
  • Athletics
On that day, Tayler ignited and electrified New Zealand with his win in the 10,000 metres and almost single-handedly ensured that the Games would be a roaring success.

Tayler’s delight at winning was shared by all New Zealanders and the fact he was not expected to win a race that included the world record-holder made it all the more memorable.

His cat and mouse game against Englishman David Black in the dying stages of the race, then running away from him on the final lap, made it one of the Games’ signature moments.

Tayler won national titles at 1500 metres, 10,000 metres and cross-country, but his fame was ensured by that one race in Christchurch.

Sadly, he was not to run much more because within a year he was cut down by arthritis.
