Dave Gallaher
Inducted in 1995
He was captain of the Original All Blacks in 1905 and a commanding figure in New Zealand rugby early in the 20th century.
Sporting Category:
  • Rugby Union
Gallaher, born in Ulster in 1873, played for Auckland from 1896 and was in the first New Zealand team to play a test, in Sydney in 1903.

His rugby career had also been interrupted by service in the Boer War.

Gallaher was chosen by the New Zealand Rugby Football Union to captain the Originals but not wanting the players to have a captain foisted on them, he resigned on the way to Britain - only to be promptly re-elected.

Gallaher was a controversial figure on the tour because he played in the wing forward position, which the British regarded as a cheat’s position.

Gallaher later became an Auckland and All Black selector.

He was killed in World War I.

New Zealand has produced some fine batsmen, among them Bert Sutcliffe, Martin Donnelly and Stewie Dempster, but knowledgeable judges rate Martin Crowe the best of them all.
