Gallaher, born in Ulster in 1873, played for Auckland from 1896 and was in the first New Zealand team to play a test, in Sydney in 1903. His rugby career had also been interrupted by service in the Boer War. Gallaher was chosen by the New Zealand Rugby Football Union to captain the Originals but not wanting the players to have a captain foisted on them, he resigned on the way to Britain - only to be promptly re-elected. Gallaher was a controversial figure on the tour because he played in the wing forward position, which the British regarded as a cheat’s position. Gallaher later became an Auckland and All Black selector. He was killed in World War I. Return to the Inductee list
