Yachts of his design have won 18 world titles in various classes and such was the demand for his expertise he moved his business from Auckland to Maryland in 1981. Farr began sailing when he was eight and designed and built his first boat when he was 11, and hasn’t stopped since. He won the national Moth title when aged 15 with a yacht of his own design. He opened his own design and building business when aged 20 and among his first international success stories was Ceramco New Zealand, which won two legs of the 1981-82 round-world race and was second overall. While Farr designs yachts for the international market, he has remained heavily involved with New Zealand, designing the challengers in the 1987 and 1988 America’s Cup campaigns, KZ7 and KZ1.
